Friday was a pivotal occasion when Age UK North Craven
handed over the Walking Rugby Group to North Ribblesdale
RUFC.
The group was started back in June 2021, with the aim of
getting people out into the fresh air, socialising and meeting
people whilst also getting fitter, following the pandemic.
Over the past 2 years we have had well over 30 people come
along and give it a TRY, and we now have a regular attendance
of players, some of whom joined at the start with new people
still coming along, so we get a game each week under the
brilliant coaching of John Hughes whose input has seen us all
improve our game!
We recently attended the Auld Greys Walking Rugby Festival in
Kendal, where it was evident that Walking Rugby is very much
an integral part of the Rugby Club there.
After some discussion, it was felt that the best way forward for
the future of the group would be if we came under the umbrella
of North Ribblesdale and all that the club has to offer.
So, after approaching the club and the request being put before
the Committee, it was unanimously agreed, and the handover
took place on Friday, when the President of North Ribblesdale
RUFC Alan Simpson was handed over the ball.
Age UKNC has been indebted to North Ribblesdale RUFC, who
have given us free use of the pitch, and use of the clubhouse
for our social gatherings but also to their huge encouragement
and support so our thanks go to Alan (Simba) who with his wife
Elaine have come along from day one.
On a personal note, whilst this group was initially set up as part
of my role as day activities co-ordinator, I can honestly say that
Friday afternoon’s have taken on a whole new meaning to me.
The group is incredibly friendly and welcoming, and we have so
much fun. I will continue to attend and support the club in any
way I can.
